Deep Freeze Work Around
posted: 8/17/06
Deep Freeze "freezes" the C drive to prevent virus', spy-ware, and other things that slow your computer down. Each time you reboot it puts everything back just like it was when it was new.
That's all well but.... I can't save anything.
This article will show you how to save on your "Deep Freeze" protected computer.
1. The only drive that is frozen is the C drive. This means that any other drives on your computer will not freeze. You can still save on floppies and flash drives.
2. If you want to save something, save it to the other drive. All of the new computers have the "My Documents" folder on the D or T drive. So if you save it in the "My Documents" folder.. it will be there when you reboot.
3. You can right click on a program such as "Word" and send to "My Documents" and the shortcut will be there after you reboot.
4. To save favorites from a web page, just right click on the link on the page and choose "copy shortcut". Open "My Documents" or the "other" drive and paste it where you want it. You will probably want to create a new folder and name it "My Favorites".
5. We still have to have virus protection for the drives that are not frozen. Leave your computers on one night each week and it will get it's Windows updates and Norton Anti-Virus updates during the night.
What you can't do:
1. You can't install any software. (Some software can be installed to the "thawed drive")
2. You can't install a printer. (You can but it won't be there when you come back)
3. You can't change any system settings. (Screen savers, etc.)
What if I need to install something or add a printer?
